The Department of Ophthalmology is committed to advancing excellence in eye care, education, and research. It focuses on developing skilled and ethical ophthalmologists through modern teaching methods, hands-on clinical training, and continuous knowledge enhancement. The department actively adopts new technologies in diagnosis and treatment while encouraging faculty and students to engage in research and innovation. Along with providing advanced medical and surgical eye care, it ensures that quality treatment remains accessible and affordable to all patients.

Our Objectives

  • At the end of the M.S. Ophthalmology program, the student should be able to:
  • Understand the significance of ocular health in relation to national health priorities.
  • Practice Ophthalmology ethically, upholding professional values and standards.
  • Identify and address the social, economic, environmental, biological, and emotional factors influencing eye health to provide holistic patient care.
  • Appreciate the role of growth and development in Ophthalmology and help patients achieve their full visual potential.
  • Take a detailed history, perform thorough ocular examinations (including anterior, posterior segment, and neuro-ophthalmic assessments), and establish accurate clinical diagnoses.
  • Conduct appropriate investigative and therapeutic procedures with competence.
  • Analyze and interpret relevant imaging and laboratory findings effectively.
  • Diagnose ocular disorders based on history, examination, and investigations.
  • Plan and implement preventive strategies for eye diseases and visual disabilities.
  • Perform common ophthalmic surgical procedures independently and safely.
  • Plan rehabilitation for patients with visual impairments or special needs.
  • Manage ocular emergencies efficiently and confidently.
  • Understand and respond sensitively to the emotional and behavioral needs of visually impaired patients.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and counseling skills with patients, families, and communities, promoting awareness and education.
  • Engage in self-directed learning, identify continuing education needs, and critically evaluate scientific literature to practice evidence-based Ophthalmology.
  • Apply basic principles of research methodology and epidemiology in clinical practice.
  • Contribute to teaching and training of medical, nursing, and paramedical personnel as an effective educator.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of National Programs for the Control of Blindness and other public health initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively as a responsible and productive member of a multidisciplinary team in eye care, education, and research.

HOD & Professor

Dr. Vijay Hari Karambelkar

Dr. V.H. Karambelkar has been leading the Department of Ophthalmology since 2018. He completed his M.B.B.S. (1982) and M.S. Ophthalmology (1986) from Dr. V.M.M.C., Solapur and has 24 years of teaching experience, serving as a recognized PG teacher since 2007. He has been an UG and PG examiner for 15 years, a PG paper assessor, and a guest speaker at medical institutes nationwide. A respected educator, he has received the “Favourite Teacher” award five times and has been providing free ophthalmology services at Chaitanya Rugnalay, Gondawale, for 25 years. He has also published 35 research articles in indexed journals.
