About the Department

The Department of Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy is dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care using advanced technology and evidence-based practices. The department provides specialized rehabilitation for both operative and non-operative cases and is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments to ensure precise assessment, effective intervention, and comprehensive rehabilitation for cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.

Skills

The department offers a wide range of clinical skills, including:

  • Manual therapy techniques such as airway clearance, breathing exercises, and thoracic mobilization to enhance lung function
  • Exercise prescription with customized aerobic and strength-training programs to improve cardiovascular and respiratory endurance.
  • Evidence-based cardiac rehabilitation protocols followed after cardiac events like CABG to restore cardiac function.
  • Mechanical ventilation management, working within a multidisciplinary team to adjust ventilator settings and administer non-invasive ventilation (NIV) such as CPAP and BiPAP.
  • Patient education focusing on breathing techniques, energy conservation, smoking cessation, and symptom self management.
  • Early post-surgical mobilization and pain management techniques including TENS
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration in ICU and post-surgical units to provide holistic patient care.

HOD & Professor

Dr. T. Poovishnu Devi

Dr. T. Poovishnu Devi, a graduate of Sri Ramakrishna College of Physiotherapy, is certified in Bioethics from the University of Haifa and is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Porto. With over 14 years of experience, she serves as Dean (Academics), Coordinator of MPT–Cardio Pulmonary Physiotherapy, and Chair of UNESCO Bioethics at Krishna Vishwa Vidyapeeth.
She has received 35 awards, holds 5 copyrights and 1 patent, and has published a Q1 research paper in BMC Medical Ethics. She has also contributed a chapter to a book on Bioethics, further strengthening her academic and research profile.

Inpatient Services

The Cardio Pulmonary Department provides inpatient services in CVTS, Cath Lab, Emergency, and various ICUs (Medical, Surgical, Nephrology). Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation is given to prevent and manage pulmonary complications in ventilated and critically ill patients, and to prevent cardiac, pulmonary, and neuromuscular complications.

Outpatient Services

Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation is provided with proper exercise testing. Tailor-made exercise protocols are created based on individual patient needs. Burns rehabilitation services are also available.
