About the Department

The Department of Public Health Dentistry at the School of Dental Sciences, Krishna Vishwa Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Karad, is dedicated to training undergraduate students in the theoretical and practical aspects of dental public health. The department actively engages in oral health research and plays a key role in various community outreach activities, including health awareness programs, rural and school health initiatives, and social welfare projects.

HOD & Professor

Dr. K. M. Shivakumar

Dr. K. M. Shivakumar is Professor and Head of Public Health Dentistry at the School of Dental Sciences, Krishna Vishwa Vidyapeeth, Karad, where he has served since 2012. He earned his Master’s from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, in 2007. He has published over 89 research papers in reputed journals with more than 6,000 citations and an h-index of 22 (Scopus) — the highest in KVV’s history. He has authored four textbooks and holds five copyrights.
His expertise includes oral disease epidemiology, biostatistics, research methodology, preventive dentistry, and dental education. He is dedicated to advancing equitable, high-quality professional education to support India’s growth and global leadership.

The Department of Public Health Dentistry is equipped with modern clinical facilities, a dental museum, seminar rooms, and offices. The department provides advanced instruments and resources essential for undergraduate training, community outreach programs, and oral health research activities.

Description

Dental Museum

The School of Dental Sciences, KVV, Karad, houses a well-equipped dental museum featuring over 150 educational exhibits across a 600 sq. ft. area. The museum displays charts, models, posters, and banners on oral health, tobacco awareness, general health, and the history of dentistry. It also includes multimedia and public address systems with a television, DVD player, and loudspeakers for patient education through movies, documentaries, and audio-visual aids created by students.

Portable Dental Unit

This unit eliminates transportation barriers by delivering dental services directly to the community. It provides essential oral health care to homebound, elderly, and differently abled individuals residing in remote areas.

Mobile Dental Van

Mobile Dental Van The Mobile Dental Van embodies the concept of “bringing dental health services to the doorstep of the needy.”
It offers a range of treatments including:
  • Oral prophylaxis
  • Tooth extractions
  • Tooth fillings
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Preventive care.
